How to measure your shield size

1. Measure the diameter of your nipple only. Do not include the areola.
2. Use the size chart to find your recommended flange size.
3. Your nipple should sit centred in the tunnel and move freely while pumping.
4. If the nipple rubs the sides, try a larger size. If excess areola is pulled in, try a smaller size.

Pumping FAQs

An electric breast pump helps you express breast milk efficiently when you're away from your baby or want more flexibility in your feeding routine. Many mums use one when returning to work, sharing feeding with a partner, relieving engorgement, increasing milk supply or when their baby has difficulty latching. Expressing also allows you to store breast milk for later while continuing your breastfeeding journey.

The best electric breast pump depends on your lifestyle and how often you plan to pump. If you'll be expressing regularly, look for a pump with hospital-grade suction, adjustable suction levels, a comfortable breast shield, a quiet motor and a rechargeable battery for portability. A closed system can also help keep milk hygienic by preventing it from entering the tubing or motor. The right fit and comfort are just as important as suction strength, as every mum's body is different.

Neither is universally better, it depends on how often you pump. Manual breast pumps are lightweight, quiet and well suited to occasional expressing. Electric breast pumps are generally faster and require less effort, making them a popular choice for mums who pump daily, exclusively pump or need to express larger amounts of milk. The NHS notes that electric pumps typically take less time because the motor does the work for you.

How often you pump depends on your goals. If you're replacing a breastfeeding session, it's generally recommended to pump whenever your baby would normally feed to help maintain your milk supply. If you're pumping to build a freezer stash, many mums add one extra pumping session each day after a feed. The NHS advises that expressing frequency varies from person to person and according to why you're expressing. If you're concerned about your baby's feeding or your milk supply, speak to your midwife, health visitor or a lactation consultant.

Yes. Regular and effective pumping can help stimulate milk production because breast milk is produced on a supply-and-demand basis. According to the NHS, the more milk you remove from the breast, the more milk your body is encouraged to make. Pumping after feeds or whenever your baby misses a feed can help maintain or increase supply. If you think your supply is low, it's a good idea to seek personalised advice from a breastfeeding specialist, as factors such as latch, feeding frequency and your baby's milk transfer also affect supply.
