Lola&Lykke endorse the WHO code on breastfeeding
What is the WHO code?
In short, the World Health Organisation (WHO) code on breastfeeding was established in 1981 and incorporates aims for governments and companies to follow in relation to breastfeeding substitutes and nursing. The Code was also adopted to help “maintain the practice of breast-feeding – and revive the practice where it is in decline”.
As a brand that supports breastfeeding and employs a “MAMA first” mantra, we pride ourselves on being WHO breastfeeding code compliant.
“The aim of this Code is to contribute to the provision of safe and adequate nutrition for infants, by the protection and promotion of breast-feeding, and by ensuring the proper use of breast milk substitutes, when these are necessary, on the basis of adequate information and through appropriate marketing and distribution.” – Article 1: Aim of the Code.
Why is it important?
The importance of the Code still stands now more than ever. It protects parents, mothers, and babies from toxic marketing tactics that demoralise or prevent mothers from achieving their breastfeeding goals. This also protects mothers who use breastfeeding substitutes (formula) or a combination of the two.
The research and studies conducted over the years to highlight the benefits of breast milk for babies are undeniable. The WHO and UNICEF recommend that babies be exclusively breastfed for 6 months until they are ready to start weaning onto other foods (6 months+) and combine the two. The Code supports this recommendation and sets clear guidelines for marketing companies to abide by in their products and advertising.

What else do we do to support breastfeeding?
Lola&Lykke nurture Mums so they can be their best and we set out to provide mothers with the support they need to take control of their motherhood experience. Since the company was founded by our mum founders, we have actively promoted breastfeeding awareness and all topics associated with it.
When it comes to breastfeeding, we support the parents who are still learning, the parents who struggled, the parents who couldn't, the parents without a support system, the parents who breastfeed for days, for years, and those who don't, but support those that do.
Our content is driven to educate and assist mothers with breastfeeding, among other topics, and our panel of maternal healthcare experts provide free evidence-based information as part of our service. Check out our support community on Instagram here.
