A new study from Metropolia University of Applied Sciences shows that wearing a support belt during pregnancy can help reduce pain and improve everyday functioning for pregnant women.
In Finland, over 43,000 women gave birth in 2024, and it is estimated that nearly half experienced lower back or pelvic pain during pregnancy. These symptoms can affect sleep, ability to work, and the capacity to stay physically active.
The study, conducted as a Master’s thesis by Anu Välimää, examined how wearing the Lola&Lykke Pregnancy Support Belt affects pain and daily functioning. A total of 93 pregnant women took part in a randomised study, where one group used the support belt alongside exercise guidance, while a control group received exercise guidance only.
Reduced Pain and Better Daily Functioning
The results show that lower back pain increased in all participants as pregnancy progressed - this is a normal part of pregnancy. However, women who wore a support belt experienced lower pain intensity compared to the control group, a difference that was statistically significant.
Clear differences were also seen in daily life. Women using the support belt found it easier to:
- Lift heavier objects
- Climb stairs
- Sleep better
Their perceived limitations were generally mild, while the control group more often reported more significant difficulties.
Supporting Physical Activity During Pregnancy
The study also found that the proportion of women who remained physically active increased more in the support belt group. As exercise during pregnancy has positive effects on both physical and mental health, this may be an important benefit.
The results also suggest that the belt was used most when pain intensified, indicating it may serve as a practical aid when symptoms worsen.
Need for Better Guidance from Maternity Care
Another important finding was that approximately 75% of participants felt they had received insufficient guidance from maternity care services, particularly regarding exercise during pregnancy and recovery after childbirth. The study points to a need for greater focus on the mother’s own health, both before and after birth.
Final thoughts
Overall, the study shows that a pregnancy support belt can be a valuable aid for pregnant women. It may help reduce pain and ease daily life, particularly as pregnancy progresses.
