Marie has been an NHS midwife for over a decade and so she has lots of experience delivering antenatal and postnatal education. Marie champions maternal mental health and campaigns against maternity discrimination. She has recently published a book called The Modern Midwife’s Guide to Pregnancy, Birth & Beyond. In this series, Marie gives you comprehensive information from her own motherhood journey as well as years of experience at maternity wards.

1. Who is Pregnancy, Birth & Beyond series for?
The digital series dedicated to helping every mum through pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period. It is helpful for mums expecting their first baby, and to mums who have gone through labour before. We have gathered a comprehensive database of information regarding all three periods meaning that much of the course is also helpful for partner in helping mum through her pregnancy journey.
2. Why do I need an online pregnancy class?
Part of the excitement of pregnancy is delving into the new tasks you’ll need to master when your little one arrives, including how you want your birth to look like, breastfeeding and tips and tricks to ease those pregnancy pains and aches. To learn all these new skills, you probably signed up for (and looked forward to) group classes. But because of the global pandemic caused by COVID-19, life has changed dramatically for everyone. Any plans you had of attending in-person prenatal classes were most likely shelved. But you should still learn. Our expert midwife Marie puts it well: “As a midwife, I’m often asked many questions about pregnancy, preparing for birth, birth itself – the various types and what women need to know about things like pain relief, induction of labour, postnatal period, breastfeeding, and so much more. Sometimes I don’t have the time to go into the level of detail I would like to. As a solution, I recorded this course.” Birth is one of the most intense, life-changing experiences a person can have. It is unpredictable, but knowing what options are available, understanding how the body works during labour and having an idea of what to expect from the whole process can make the experience much less scary. Pregnancy classes are also beneficial for whoever will be supporting you during your pregnancy, since they’ll learn about what happens during pregnancy and delivery, how to physically and emotionally comfort you and how they can advocate for you throughout the experience.
3. How long do I have access to the course?
You will have unlimited access to all the content for 12 months from the day you enroll. This will see you through your entire pregnancy and first three months with your new baby.
If however, you fall pregnant again and would like to revisit the course, please do send us an email and we will reactivate the course for you.
4. How can I access this class?
You can access this class on your phone, tablet, desktop, laptop, and/or smart TV. All Pregnancy, Birth & Beyond series’ episodes are housed in the online learning platform Teachable
5. Is this class helpful for my support partner?
Yes! We have multiple sections in the Pregnancy episodes and Birth episodes dedicated to your support people! While we talk about how your support person can help, we highly encourage you to go through the series with your partner or trusted friend/family member. We’ve also cut and timestamped all our episodes for your convenience: if there is a specific section or appoint you’d like to share with a birthing partner for example, it’s easy to pull that up from within the episodes.
6. When is the best time to take a comprehensive digital pregnancy, birth and postpartum class?
You can take an online pregnancy, birth and postpartum class at any point in pregnancy, although we think you sit down and watch the entire series in the beginning of your pregnancy. This prepares you for the antenatal hurdles, too.
As you are approaching birth, it’s a good idea to refresh your memory around the end of your 2nd/early 3rd trimester. This will allow the information to still be fresh on your mind if you get to your due date, while also ensuring you are prepared in the event of a pre-term delivery.
7. Am I expected to give birth one way over another?
Every birth is different, and there's no guarantee for expectant parents that things will go exactly as planned. Our digital series isn’t designed to have you follow a set script, but rather give you the information and tools you need so you can make the best choices for you and your growing family.
In your course instructor - Midwife Marie’s own words: “You’ll often hear ‘don’t make a plan because birth is unpredictable’ but isn’t life unpredictable? Yet we still plan for things. Women that are usually well informed and do research can sometimes be discouraged to plan because it’s ‘unpredictable’. It sounds strange, but I encourage mums to explore every birth option, including the one they least want.”
Having a load of negative emotion around a certain birth type will not be very helpful for you (on the day) if you’re advised that would be the best option for your baby. Being prepared means that you’ll be able to change track without stressing too much as things unfold. So, if you want a planned C-section then research home birth and if you want a home birth find out about C-section.

9. Why should I choose the Pregnancy, Birth & Beyond over other digital courses?
During the series Marie covers all the basics and also talks about topics that aren’t generally included in standard antenatal and postnatal courses – answering the questions you’ve always wanted to know but have been afraid to ask! Such as: What should you expect from a midwife appointment? Does giving birth really hurt THAT much? How to reframe your fear of childbirth? What does birth look like through the eyes of your baby? What does the first 24 hours after birth look like? How to seek support for birth trauma?

‘Full of incredible advice and information, delivered in a friendly and easy to understand format. It answers all those questions going around our heads but may be too nervous or embarrassed to ask– from breathing, to sex, to postnatal poo! ’For anyone planning a pregnancy or is currently pregnant, ‘The Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond Series’ by midwife Marie Louise is a must watch. This digital series offers women information that will guide and support them to make informed decisions for their own pregnancy. -Natilla Henry, Former Head of Midwifery, University College London Hospital
