During pregnancy, we experience many uncomfortable symptoms, including lower back pain, pelvic girdle pain and SI joint pain. A maternity support band can help ensure a pain-free pregnancy and support your overall wellness and recovery.

The gentle compression of our pregnancy girdle helps support the uterus and reduces discomfort from movement during physical activity. In addition, our pregnancy belly support belt provides external cues to your body to facilitate proper posture. During pregnancy, the extra weight carried in front of the body in combination with the stretching and weakening of key core muscles that support the spine may lead to a lack of core stability.  Maternity support belt provides your core the support it needs, correcting your posture and reducing pains as a result.

Over 2/3 of expecting mothers experience back and pelvic pains during pregnancy, but there is no need to just put up with discomfort. Our pregnancy support belt helps reduce overall stress on the body during pregnancy and can help get you through your daily activities with less pain.

  • 1. Why should you wear a pregnancy belly belt?
    • During pregnancy, we experience many uncomfortable symptoms, including lower back pain, pelvic girdle pain and SI joint pain.

Our maternity girdle also relieves bladder pressure, makes exercising easier, may help prevent pre-term contractions and helps reduce overall stress on the body during pregnancy.
  • 2. How to wear a maternity support band?
    • Wrap the band around your abdomen, and close it with the velcro fastening underneath the highest point of your belly, around your waist. Note that the pregnancy belly band should not be tightened around your baby belly, but underneath it so that it does not press on the belly and provides a lifting effect from under your belly. Tighten the double layer compression straps to the front part of the band to provide a pain relieving and lifting effect for your abdomen. Once these straps are fastened, you should be able to feel the weight of you belly more evenly distributed and and your posture corrected, helping to support and stabilize your back. The maternity belt should be snug enough to hold up your belly and keep your pelvic bones closer together, but be careful not to make it too tight. You should be able to breathe and move comfortably.
  • 3. How can you alleviate pelvic girdle pain and symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) pain?
    • The pelvic bones soften in pregnancy because of the increased production of the hormone relaxin. This can cause pain in the pelvic ligaments, joints and muscles. Also known as pelvic girdle pain (PGP) or symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD), pain in the pelvis can be extremely uncomfortable. Both of these conditions can be relieved significantly by wearing a maternity support belt.

The bones that make up the pelvis (the pelvic girdle) can cause pain during pregnancy. These pains arise from the sacroiliac and symphysis pubis joints. Some women experience pain in their lower back, buttocks, thighs, hips, groin or pubic bones at some time during their pregnancy. Although PGP can be painful and distressing, it will not harm your baby.

You may have pain or difficulty with activities such as: - Walking (especially for prolonged periods) - Climbing stairs - Turning over in bed - Putting on socks/tights/shoes/trousers. Other symptoms of PGP may include clicking or grinding sensations on movement or feeling that the pelvic joints are loose/unstable.

Some practical steps for alleviating pain:
✔️ Remain active within the limits of pain and avoid activities which you know makes the pain worse, but if an activity does not increase pain there is no need to restrict that activity.
✔️ Rest is important, it can help to rest more frequently, sitting down or perching for activities that normally involve standing eg ironing or preparing food.
✔️ Try sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees.
✔️ To turn over in bed, keep knees together, or turn “under” by going on to hands and knees rather than onto your back.
✔️ Seek help from a maternity physiotherapist and strengthen your pelvic floor
✔️ Wear a pelvic support girdle to provide your core and pelvic region with more stability
  • 4. How to treat pelvic pressure and round ligament pain?
    • Round ligament pain is one of the most common pregnancy discomforts. The round ligaments are two ropelike cords of connective tissues that support the uterus on each side. These ligaments connect the uterus to the groin and pubic region. As the uterus grows during pregnancy, the round ligaments can stretch. When a pregnant woman moves, it can cause the round ligaments to spasm painfully.

Round ligament pain feels like a deep, sharp, stabbing or stretching sensation that begins or worsens with movement. Some triggering movements may include rolling over in bed or taking a step. Pregnant women usually experience round ligament pain on the right side of the lower abdomen or pelvis. However, some experience it on their left side or both sides.

To avoid triggering round ligament pain, try:
✔️ Resting on one side, with the knees bent and pillows between the legs and under the belly changing positions slowly
✔️ Soaking in a warm (not hot) bath
      ✔️ Applying a heating pad
✔️ Wearing a maternity support belt
✔️ Practicing prenatal yoga or other stretching and pelvic floor strengthening exercises

Some mothers find that changing their daily routine to include more rest and fewer sudden movements helps alleviate round ligament pain. If you experience this pain frequently, you can speak to your doctor or physiotherapist, who may recommend stretches and gentle exercises to help relieve discomfort. Round ligament pain should resolve completely after childbirth.
  • 5. What are the main differences between different types of pregnancy belts?
    • There are three main designs of pregnancy belts. Some are cheaper than others and the price depends on the complexity of the design as well as the materials the pregnancy belt is made from.

Simple pregnancy belts are made from light, elasticated material that has one layer and closes with a velcro. Sometimes these simple belts include a piece of fabric that covers the bump. Simple pregnancy bands offer very light support and usually are not very effective at alleviating pains.

The second type is a pregnancy belt with extra support, made from slightly sturdier material. These maternity bands have one fastening panel that is tightened underneath the belly with velcro. These types of bands offer a slightly higher amount of support for the abdominal area.

The third and most supportive type is a maternity support belt with extra back support and double layer compression, like the Lola&Lykke® Core Relief Pregnancy Support Belt. These types of pregnancy support belts are ultra supportive and help to spread the extra weight of pregnancy to other parts of the body. This brings relief from back pain, from hip separation or pelvic girdle pain (PGP) and pelvic pressure. The double layer design effectively helps lift up the belly and improves the posture, making it very effective in alleviating most types of pregnancy pains.
  • 6. How long should I wear a pregnancy support band for?
    • Wear a belly band or support garment for no more than two to three hours at a time to prevent overdependence. Exercises to strengthen the transverse abdominis should be done in combination with the use of a belly band to strengthen the core muscles both during and after pregnancy. Always consult your doctor before using any compression garments if in doubt or if any special conditions apply to your health. For instance, women with compromised circulation or abnormal blood pressure may be advised against the use of a belly band. Belly bands are for temporary use and are not a permanent fix. It is also important to address the underlying dysfunction. For instance, a referral to physiotherapy is recommended to address ongoing pain both during and after pregnancy.
  • 7. Is it safe to wear a support band during pregnancy?
    • Pregnancy belly belts have no adverse effects on pregnant women who wear them. Rather, they give you specific benefits that make your pregnancy life more comfortable and healthy.

Maternity support bands are aids designed to ease discomforts in you pregnancy life. Though they come with different style and designs, they all serve the same purpose of supporting your lower back and your growing baby bump.

You should be mindful of over dependence by wearing the band for just for two to three hours at a time. If you wear the band for too long, you may end up weakening your lower body muscles. You should also be mindful of over tightening the band: if the compression is too tight this can restrict your body’s ability to circulate your blood.
